House Sparrows Wanted

Wanted for feather mite research - house sparrows (Passer domesticus).  These birds are rarely turned in to the Fish & Wildlife Forensic Lab from which I get most of my birds, most likely because they are viewed as 'common'.  Should you happen to find a recently dead adult house sparrow (no nestlings, please), I would greatly appreciate your placing the body in a ziplock bag, freezing it, and bringing it in to campus at your leisure.  I will come to pick it up.  Thanks!  Heather Proctor (hproctor@ualberta.ca; 2-5172 or 2-5704)

Burrowing Owl Job Posting

We are looking for 2 field assistants for 1-2 months (June - July) of Burrowing Owl field work in Southern Alberta and Saskatchewan. This is a joint project between the University of Alberta and Environment Canada studying Burrowing Owl foraging and effects of petroleum development on Burrowing Owl space use. The positions start ASAP with food and housing paid for in the field and wages are from $1850 to $2150 per month depending on experience. This is a great opportunity to get some hands-on experience with an Endangered species and a very innovative research project. Please email a resume with 3 references to Corey Scobie at cscobie@ualberta.ca. These positions will be filled as suitable candidates are found. If you have any questions, please call me at 403-363-7941.

Graduate Biologist Needed
Looking for a graduate biologist to do an environmental assessment on our farm because we are opposing energy exploration activity.  Our farm is on the Athabasca River between Whitecourt and Fort Assiniboine.  It is like a park. We believe the area is worth protecting. The biologist could stay on the farm and work from a campsite or cabin that we have on the river.  We are not sure how long it would take or what would be a fair compensation but we would sure appreciate the help.
If interested please contact Michele Schmidt at 780-785-3495 or 780-674-1917 or by mail:

Journals up for grabs
Some emeritus professors, previously resident on the 6th floor (Zoology), have left behind a number of journals that they and the current residents don't want. Before we discard them to regain some shelf space, we would like to determine whether anybody else wants them.
They are in the small corridor running opposite to Z608. Signs on the shelves indicate clearly which journals are up for grabs.

Here's general list:
Bound Journals
Annual Review of Genetics (1980 - 1992)
Annual Review of Ecology and Systematics (1976 - 1990)
Annual Review of Cell Biology (vols 1, 2, 4, 5 and 8)

Unbound Journals
Science (mid-late 1990s)
Nature (mid-80s to late 90s)
Genetics (1977 - 1997)
Journal of Embryology and Experimental Morphology (JEEM; 1979)
Biotechniques (mid-late 1990s)
Evolution (a few issues from 1984 and 1999)
International Journal of Invertebrate Reproduction (1979 - 1981)
Canadian Journal of Zoology (1976-1977)
Yellowstone Science (Vols 1-6)

If any of these interest you, please come by at your leisure to browse and help yourself. At some point after mid-May, we shall arrange for the rest to be discarded. Questions? Reuben.kaufman@ualberta.ca or tel: 492-1279.

WISEST 3rd Annual Fun Golf Tournament - July 16th at The Ranch Golf & Country Club

Join us in the morning for a round of Texas Scramble golf and network with those who support diversity while experiencing innovative demonstrations in science, engineering and technology.  All proceeds from this fun event will support WISEST initiatives.
WISEST partners with industry, government, and academia to offer programs which advance, attract and retain under-represented populations in science, engineering, and technology, which increases diversity and workforce availability.  These programs expose individuals to science, engineering, and technology through interaction with industry and researchers at an early age and throughout their careers.  The high school research program attracts many gifted students and welcomes aboriginal involvement.  WISEST encourages students to discover new opportunities, challenges professionals to reach their potential, assists organizations through development of a greater and more diverse workforce, and promotes a culture of innovation, collaboration, and volunteerism.

This Week's Funny

After the egg hunt on Easter Sunday, the young farm boy decided to play a prank. He went to the chicken coop and replaced every single egg with a brightly colored one.

A few minutes later the rooster walked in saw all the colored eggs, then stormed outside and killed the peacock.
