This book presents a classification of
both living and fossil fishes. All
recognized 482 families of extant
fishes which contain about 24, 600
species are discussed. For most of
these families there is an illustration
and common name and for each there
is a statement on the general habitat
and range, a brief description, a listing
of all or sample of major genera, and
an estimate of the number of species.
Other schemes of classification are
discussed. There are also intoductory
comments, presentation of lower
chordate taxa, a checklist of families,
and an extensive reference section.
