Graduate student positions available

Department of Biological Sciences

The University of Alberta

I am looking for students with a strong academic background and an interest in studies of basal metazoan phyla to examine questions relating to the origin of tissues, coordinating and contractile systems. In particular two projects stand out: The first involves pioneering in situ hybridization protocols with sponges to develop a robust system with which to test the hypothesis of homology of germ layers among the Metazoa. The second involves a long overdue in-depth study into cell-cell junctions in the Porifera and would involve a great variety of microscopy techniques (including freeze-fracture EM), as well as antibody and possibly molecular approaches.

Applications will be considered throughout the year. Interested students could begin in September 2006

Departmental admission requirements and application details are available at: http://www.biology.ualberta.ca/programs/graduate/prospective/

Students with a strong academic record should consider applying for an Alberta Ingenuity Scholarship: http://www.albertaingenuity.ca/grants_awards/students_guidelines.php
