Research Interests

His research interests focus on protein glycosylation in pathogenic bacteria and the potential application of the relaxed specificity of the enzymes involved in these pathways. These applications promise a new era in glycoengineering.

Dr Feldman is a Principal Investigator in the Alberta Ingenuity Centre for Carbohydrate Science

Specific projects target the mechanism of O-linked protein glycosylation, the generation of antibacterial protein-polysaccharide conjugates vaccines in vivo and the production in bacteria of glycoproteins containing recombinant glycans of therapeutic and industrial interest.

We have recently initiated a project on the study of outer membrane vesicles (OMVs). For years OMVs were thought to be just bacterial debris, but now we know that OMV formation is a directed process and that bacteria pack and deliver virulence factors in their vesicles. Using Porphyromonas gingivalis and Salmonella typhimurium as model organisms, we are studying how bacteria select  OMVs  protein cargo and their importance in pathogenesis.
