Current Research Interests
Current
interests include anaerobic hydrocarbon biodegradation and methane biogenesis,
particularly in oil sands tailings ponds. We are using microbial metagenomic analysis (
http://www.hydrocarbonmetagenomics.com/)
coupled with analytical chemistry to identify the genes responsible for this
activity. In collaborative work we are studying the role of microbes in
accelerating the settling of solids and recovery of pore water in tailings
ponds (‘biodensification’). Other petroleum-related
research includes fundamental studies of hydrocarbon transport across
biological membranes. A second area of interest is the isolation and
characterization of cold-adapted bacterial communities that live underneath and
within glaciers, including the role of extracellular polymeric substances in
modulating bacterial survival in these cold environments.
