CAVEATS FOR USING PROCTOR'S EXCEL SPREADSHEET OF FEATHER MITES AND HOSTS
(1) the list is in two parts, one containing host and mite information, the other containing details of the reference literature used. Each reference has a unique paper code number referred to in each file to allow cross-referencing.
(2) this list is not complete; in particular, it is missing much of the literature from the 1800's.
(3) host taxonomy has been reconciled to Clements, J.F. 1991. Birds of the World: a Checklist. Vista, California: Ibis Publishing. When I changed a host name from that in the original reference I have made a note of this as a comment. If you cannot find a bird genus or species by searching the spreadsheet, try specifically searching in 'Comments'.
(4) although host names are fairly thoroughly reconciled and spell-checked, mite names are not. Thus it would be dangerous to perform an analysis on these records without first determining synonymies etc. for the mites.
(5) each record is not an independent observation, but simply a note that the association appeared in the literature cited. Many records are repeated publication of previously published associations.
(6) not every literature record is equally reliable!
(7) quality of locality data as noted in the spreadsheet is poor. Go to the cited original literature for better information.
