Hugh V. Danks

Hugh DanksRetired August 2007 as Head, Biological Survey of Canada (Terrestrial Arthropods)
Ph.D., Entomology, Imperial College, University of London, 1968.

Brief synopses of Scientific work, General experience, Previous affiliations, the Titles of presentations, and a List of publications are given here.

For an outline of Hugh Danks' career see the Bulletin of the Entomological Society of Canada: 35(4): 200-202, (2003)

Scientific work :
Hugh Danks carried out research on modes of seasonal adaptation in insects (such as cold-hardiness, diapause and the control of life cycles), the diversity and adaptations of Arctic insects, and the fauna of Canada in the context of North American biodiversity. His other main interest was in the ecology of aquatic insects.

Early studies were on topics such as the overwintering and phenology of Chironomidae (including arctic species), biology and ecology of Tachinidae parasitizing Heliothis spp. in North Carolina, and biology and phenology of high arctic mosquitoes. Graduate work was on the bionomics of stem-nesting aculeate Hymenoptera.

From 1977 until his retirement in 2007, Hugh Danks was responsible for coordinating the Biological Survey, with the Scientific Committee for that Survey, and for the production of Survey newsletters, briefs and so on. He was also directly involved in some of the Survey's scientific projects, reviews and syntheses that serve as baselines for further work in the fields of insect biodiversity and of seasonal adaptations.  Scientific books included Canada and its insect fauna (Ed.), 1979; Arctic Arthropods, 1981; Insect dormancy: an ecological perspective, 1987; Insect life-cycle polymorphism (Ed.), 1994; and Insects of the Yukon (Ed.), 1997.

Survey activities have resulted also in briefs and other documents to provide information to facilitate research, such as a brief on how to assess insect biodiversity.  Hugh Danks also edited the newsletters Newsletter of the Biological Survey of Canada (Terrestrial Arthropods), Arthropods of Canadian Grasslands and Arctic Insect News.

Hugh is no longer active in professional entomology because his research interests – primarily in broad themes of seasonal adaptations and biodiversity – require extensive integration of information in a way that is not feasible on an occasional basis.

General experience:
Teaching experience included graduate courses in Insect ecology, Insect pest management, and Special topics in biology; and undergraduate courses in Biology and Man (year 1), Principles of Environmental Biology (2), Investigative laboratory in ecology (3), Insect diversity and ecology (3), Ontario Universities Field Biology Course [Tropical field biology, and Insect ecology](3), Zoogeography (3), Special topics in biology (3), Advanced seminar in ecology (4), Honours research (4), and Honours theses (4).

University departmental responsibilities have included Graduate Studies Committee (Secretary), Library Representative, Animal Care Committee, Technical Resources Committee, Invited Speakers Seminar Committee, Dean's Biology Planning Group, and Committee on Renewals, Promotions and Tenure.

Administrative experience in the Entomological Society of Canada included: President (1997 - 1998); Executive (1996 - 1999); Director-at-large (1992 - 1996); Membership Committee (Chair 1993 -1996); Publications Committee (Chair 1987-1991; 1993-1994); Finance Committee (Member 1981-1987; Chair 1984-1987); Language Advisory Committee (Chair 1986-1987); Representative to the Committee of Parliamentarians, Scientists and Engineers (1982-1986).

Other experience comprised a variety of collecting, editorial, computer and administrative work, including Secretary-Treasurer of the Biological Survey Foundation for many years, a reviewer for papers and grant proposals for a large number of international journals and granting agencies, a member of journal editorial boards, and an external examiner for graduate student theses, and a reviewer for university graduate programmes.

Hugh Danks has also been involved in teaching children about insects, especially through authorship of the children's book The Bug Book and Bottle, and talks stemming from that 1987 publication (available in more than 2 million copies in 6 countries in several languages). He has also authored an extensively revised edition of that book published in spring 2009, and therefore continues these interests.
