The Biological Survey of Canada (Terrestrial Arthropods) helps to coordinate scientific research among specialists on the Canadian fauna of insects, mites, and their relatives.

This web site describes the Survey and provides various resources for work on the Canadian insect fauna, including on-line publications and databases.

The Survey synthesizes knowledge and ideas, focuses available expertise on to topics that are particularly significant, and acts as a clearing-house for information. It thereby serves as a catalyst for more efficient scientific progress and provides national direction for work on Canada's insect fauna.

What's New

Curation Blitz - Saskatoon
The first Biological Survey Curation Blitz will be held on Monday, October 1, 2007 from 7-9 p.m. during the joint annual meeting of the Entomological Society of Canada and the Entomological Society of Saskatchewan. The location is to be determined but likely will be either at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada or the University of Saskatoon.

The goal is to sort unidentified specimens and increase the level of curation for the collections at these two institutions. Additionally, those of us interested in faunistics of Canadian arthropods will have a better idea of the material available in these collections.

For more information contact David McCorquodale: david_mccorquodale@cbu.ca, 902-563-1260

More details will be posted on this web site and on the notice board at the ESC/ESS Joint Annual Meeting.

New Head of Biological Survey
Dr. Andrew Smith has been chosen as the Head of the Biological Survey of Canada for a one-year term beginning June 4th 2007. Dr. Hugh Danks will retire on August 31st 2007.
