ACCRU provides a collaborative framework and support for wildlife and fisheries research and learning programs throughout Alberta and the Canadian North. These include:
Research
ACCRU facilitates and supports the following independently-managed and funded initiatives:
- Alberta Biodiversity Grant
Program - The ACA Grants
in Biodiversity Program, funded by the Alberta Conservation Association, provides
research funds to outstanding graduate students and postdoctoral
fellows doing research in Alberta. The mandate of the program
is to increase knowledge of the flora and fauna of Alberta.
- Alberta
Biodiversity Monitoring Institute - The Alberta Biodiversity
Monitoring Institute (ABMI) supports natural resource management
in Alberta by providing relevant, timely and credible scientific
knowledge on the status and trends
of provincial biodiversity. By monitoring biodiversity at 1656
sites across the
province, the Alberta Biodiversity Monitoring Institute brings
impartial, credible, and
relevant knowledge to decision makers. The Institute is housed
at the Alberta Research Council, Vegreville, Alberta, and in ACCRU
research labs, University of Alberta.
- Adaptive Management Experiment
- To help managers develop innovative management solutions,
the AME Team has adopted active adaptive management as a scientific
framework. This approach treats management strategies as experiments,
allowing an evaluation of ecological and socio-economic response
to management actions.
- Precision Ranching Initiative
- A program based at the University Ranch at Kinsella
which seeks to manage rangeland ecosystems by 'grazing the right
animal at the right place at the right time'. Infrastructure for
multi-species grazing experiments provided by ISRIP.
Graduate programs
Thesis-based graduate programs leading to MSc and PhD degrees are offered in several departments at partner universities. The largest programs are managed by:
A comprehensive suite of wildlife and fisheries
